I am unsure if I should go on a sponsored Umrah trip

QUESTION

As-Salam Aleikum,

I am married and alhamdulillah blessed with a 9 year old son. I am basically from India, but currently I am working in Erbil, Kurdistan, Iraq as a professor.

My Parents wish to sponsor all of their five children (three sons & two daughters) along with their spouses and grandchildren for Umarah Inshah Allah in 2022. I am the youngest of all.

Q1: My question is: Is it permissible to go for umrah on parents’ money if I am working?

Q2: Can my wife and my child go on Umrah on my parents’ money, even if I am earning.

But I don’t want to spend this amount of money now, as i have other objectives in life which are yet to be fulfilled (like purchasing my own house, saving for child’s future, retirement etc)

I may plan for umrah or Hajj inshallah within the next five to six years, once I have at least some savings for a house or for my kids’ education.

I hope you understood my question, and the question revolving in my mind. It is difficult to say no to my parents wish, as they are already above 70 years, as well I may not be mentally willing if I part with my money at this stage of my life.

Need your advice.

Thanks in Advance.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Respected Brother,

You have been offered an opportunity to visit the house of Allah Ta’ala and perform Umrah with your entire family. The Ka’ba is the house of Allah. One only invites those whom he loves to his house. Similarly, the opportunity to visit the Ka’bah for Umrah is an invitation from Allah Ta’ala Himself. Allah has chosen you as a guest. It is only befitting for a guest to accept the invitation of the host. See the following hadith:

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَفْدُ اللَّهِ ثَلَاثَةٌ الْغَازِي، وَالْحَاجُّ، وَالْمُعْتَمِرُ

The Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said: The guests of Allah are three: The Ghazi (the warrior who fights in Jihad just for the sake of Allah), the Hajji (the pilgrim who performs Hajj) and the Mu’tamir (the pilgrim who performs Umrah). (Sunan Al Nasai – 2625)[1]

You state that your parents wish to sponsor you along with your family to go for Umrah. However, you feel that this money could be spent in other avenues that will be beneficial for your finances and your future.

Resected Brother,

We advise you to shift your perspective to that of your parents. Ponder over the fact that they have raised you and your siblings. They have given you an education. They have cared and loved you. They have looked out for you all their lives. They have now reached and exceeded the delicate age of 70. They will not live forever. They have lived a long life and are aware that their meeting with their creator is nearing.

Every parent has the desire to perform Umrah and Hajj with their children as a family. Many of us often go out on holiday as a family unit. Given your parents’ age, the desire to perform Umrah as one family is intensified. They too must have weighed the pros and cons before making such a decision. Their final decision was to sponsor all of you to go for Umrah.

We advise you to fulfil your parents’ wishes and go for Umrah. Do not miss this opportunity to visit the house of Allah due to financial worry. One benefit among the many benefits of Umrah is that Allah Ta’ala will put Khair and Barakah in your wealth as well as save you from poverty. See the following Hadith:

Abdullah (Radhiyallahu Anhu) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said: Perform Hajj and ‘Umrah consecutively, for they remove poverty and sin as the bellows removes impurity from iron, gold and silver, and Hajj Al-Mabrur brings no less a reward than Paradise. (Sunan Al Tirmizi -810)[2]

It is permissible for your parents to sponsor you as well as your family on an Umrah trip.
